Number designations:
We list a certain amount of commandments so a Disciple gets the idea of what a commandment is. A commandment is a quote verbatim from YHWH or Jesus. We don’t list all of them as there is no point to. Also number designations are not important. They are simply created to make referring to them easier. But we have verse and chapter to refer them to and besides different people will see more than one command in a verse while others only see one.
There are two popular lists of commandments. There are the 613 commandments of the Jews. There are also the 10 commandments which both Jews and Christians recognize. Although many think the 10 commandments were actually 10 categories of commandments. Each person will have to decide on their own if this is accurate.
When Jesus discussed the law, he said he did not come to destroy the law, but to fulfill it. The word ‘fulfill’ means “to add to”, “to fill to the top”. Jesus said “every jot and tittle” of the law will last until “heaven and Earth pass away”, not 1 year later after he was crucified. Following this statement Jesus went through some commands and added to them. Example:
Matthew 5:28 NKJV “But I say to you that whoever looks at a woman to lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart.
Jesus was asked what is the greatest commandment, Jesus said:
Matthew 22:37-40 KJV – Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. 38 This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.
So under the New Covenant, Jesus has placed these commandments before all. So in our list we put these first and second.
Further more, there are several commandments that are lumped together as one commandment. But they are not one commandment, they are several.
EXAMPLE:
Exodus 20:8-11 KJV – 8 Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy. 9 Six days shalt thou labour [command #1] and do all thy work: 10 But the seventh day is the sabbath of the LORD thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work [command #2], thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates: 11 For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the LORD blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it.
There is a clear command to work 6 days. There is also a clear command not to work on the 7th day.
The 613 commandments leaves Jesus out completely. So it is a unfulfilled list. It is also a list that invents commands where there aren’t any.
EXAMPLE:
This is the first commandment in the Orthodox Jews’ list. The following comes from their website. “To know that G-d exists” (Ex. 20:2; Deut. 5:6) Source: Click HERE
However, when we compare this commandment to what Exodus 20:2 actually says, we see no such commandment “To know”.
Exodus 20:2 KJV
I am the LORD thy God, which have brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage.
This verse has no commandment.
This type of thing happens many times in the list of the 613 laws.
YHWH & JESUS WORDS VERBATIM
In our list we strive to only have Yahweh and Jesus’ words. Disciples of Jesus are not teachers. Jesus and YHWH are the teachers. We at our best repeat what they say. However there is also a commandment to discuss scripture wherever we go.
Deuteronomy 6:7 NKJV – “You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, when you walk by the way, when you lie down, and when you rise up.
Deuteronomy 11:19 NKJV – “You shall teach them to your children, speaking of them when you sit in your house, when you walk by the way, when you lie down, and when you rise up.
This may sound like teaching, but it is not. We make clear throughout this website that only Jesus and YHWH’s words are true. That when we type our own words they may or may not be accurate. Also when we group verses together to make a point, that this grouping of verses may be wrong and misleading. So knowing this, the reader can join the discussion. Disciples learn from Jesus.
When you compare this to the Christians, you see them with many teachers. After Jesus rose again, many people wrote texts to try to influence Jesus’ followers. In the course of time Paul’s teachings took precedent over Jesus in mainstream churches. Paul destroyed the law and preached grace. Jesus said, “I come not to destroy the law”. He also never mentioned this idea of ‘Grace’. And Paul never mentioned the word Disciples when the mission of a Disciples it to “Make Disciples of all nations”. – Jesus
